With advantages such as high measurement accuracy, a wide turndown ratio, and low pressure loss, vortex flowmeter have become a preferred choice for many industries. However, proper installation is critical to fully realize their performance. Even minor installation errors can lead to inaccurate measurement data and affect precise process control. So, what are the installation requirements for an ARTang vortex flowmeter, and what details should be noted?
I. Installation Environment Requirements
Temperature and Humidity
ARTang vortex steam flow meters are relatively sensitive to ambient temperature and humidity. In general, the suitable operating temperature range is from −40°C to 85°C, and the relative humidity should be maintained between 5% and 95% RH (non-condensing). Excessively high temperatures may affect the performance of the internal electronic components, while high humidity can cause moisture buildup on circuit boards and lead to failures. Therefore, when selecting an installation location, avoid high-temperature and high-humidity areas such as near steam pipelines or places with long-term water accumulation.
2. Vibration and Electromagnetic Interference
Strong vibration can interfere with normal operation and cause fluctuations in measurement data. As a result, vortex steam flow meters should not be installed near equipment with significant vibration, such as high-power motors or compressors. In addition, since the flow meter uses electronic components for signal processing, it should be kept away from strong sources of electromagnetic interference, such as transformers and variable-frequency drives, to prevent signal disturbance and measurement errors.
II. Piping Installation Requirements
1. Straight Pipe Length Requirements
To ensure the fluid reaches a stable flow profile before entering the vortex flowmeter and to maintain measurement accuracy, there are strict requirements for the upstream and downstream straight pipe lengths. Under normal conditions, the upstream straight pipe length should be no less than 10 times the pipe inside diameter (10D), and the downstream straight pipe length should be no less than 5 times the pipe inside diameter (5D).
If fittings such as elbows or valves are installed upstream, the required straight pipe length must be increased accordingly. For example, when there is a 90° elbow upstream, the straight pipe length should be at least 40D; when a fully open gate valve is installed upstream, the straight pipe length should be no less than 10D. Adequate straight pipe lengths allow the flow to fully develop and reduce the impact of turbulence on measurement results.
2. Pipe Concentricity and Sealing
During installation, ensure proper concentric alignment between the vortex flowmeter and the pipeline so that the meter axis coincides with the pipe axis. This prevents uneven flow distribution caused by eccentric installation, which can affect measurement accuracy. At the same time, ensure all pipe connections are well sealed to prevent leakage. Use appropriate gaskets and tighten the bolts evenly. Poor sealing can lead to medium leakage, which not only affects measurement accuracy but may also pose safety risks.
3. Pipe Support and Fixation
To prevent pipeline vibration from being transmitted to the vortex steam flow meter and to avoid deformation caused by internal pressure that could affect measurement performance, proper supports and fixing devices should be installed on the upstream and downstream piping. The spacing of support points should be determined based on factors such as pipe diameter, material, and operating pressure, ensuring the pipeline remains stable and provides a solid installation foundation for the vortex steam flow meter.

III. Installation Orientation Requirements
ARTang vortex flowmeter can be installed horizontally, vertically, or at an inclined angle, but each orientation has specific considerations.
For horizontal installation, ensure that the flow meter axis is perfectly level to prevent air bubbles in the pipeline from accumulating in the measuring tube, which could affect measurement accuracy.
For vertical installation, the fluid should flow from bottom to top. This ensures the pipe remains completely filled and helps avoid empty-pipe conditions.
For inclined installation, it is also essential to ensure that the pipeline stays fully filled with fluid. The installation angle should be adjusted according to actual site conditions to maintain accurate and reliable measurements.
IV. Installation Details and Precautions
1. Instrument Inspection
Before installation, carefully inspect the vortex flowmeter to ensure the appearance is intact and all components are complete. Verify that the model and specifications match the design requirements. At the same time, check whether the certificates and technical documents are complete, such as the product certificate and user manual, to ensure that a qualified product is being installed.
2. Protective Measures
During installation, proper protective measures should be taken to prevent impact, scratches, or other damage to the flow meter. Special care should be given to the sensor section—handle it gently to avoid damaging sensitive components. When welding the pipeline, effective protection should be applied to prevent welding spatter from splashing onto the flow meter and damaging the instrument.
3. Signal Transmission
Signal cables should be routed properly, and suitable cable specifications should be selected to ensure stable signal transmission. Signal lines should be kept as far away as possible from power cables to avoid electromagnetic interference. In addition, proper shielding and grounding of the signal cables are required to minimize external interference and ensure that measurement data are accurately transmitted to the display unit or control system.
Proper installation is the foundation for accurate measurement and stable operation of ARTang vortex flowmeter. From selecting a suitable installation environment, to meeting pipeline installation requirements, and to controlling details during the installation process, every step is critical. Only by strictly following the installation guidelines and paying attention to every detail can ARTang vortex flowmeter deliver optimal performance, providing reliable flow measurement and control for industrial processes and helping enterprises achieve efficient and precise operations.
