1. Ensures Measurement Accuracy

  • electro magnetic meter measure flow based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction.

  • For this to work properly, the fluid must be electrically conductive and the voltage signal generated must be stable.

  • A grounding ring helps stabilize the reference potential, preventing electrical noise or stray voltages from interfering with the signal.

2. Provides a Reliable Ground Path

  • Many flowmeter installations, especially those with plastic or non-conductive pipes, lack a proper electrical ground.

  • The grounding ring provides a direct electrical path to ground, helping maintain proper signal referencing.

3. Protects Electrodes from Electrical Noise

  • Without grounding, stray currents in the pipeline (caused by nearby motors, pumps, or poor bonding) can enter the flowmeter.

  • This can distort readings or damage electrodes. Grounding rings divert these unwanted currents away from sensitive components.

4. Prevents Galvanic Corrosion

  • When different metals are used in the system (e.g., stainless steel electrodes and carbon steel pipes), galvanic corrosion may occur.

  • A grounding ring can help equalize potential differences, reducing the chance of corrosion around the electrodes.

When do you need a grounding ring?

1. There is scattered current interference in the measured pipeline.

2. The tested pipeline is plastic or coated with insulating layer.

What is the function of grounding ring of electro magnetic meter?

Accurate and stable measurement is based on the complete grounding of the electro magnetic meter. The flowmeter with grounding ring eliminates the interference caused by dispersed current in the pipeline and can provide more reliable flow data.

Note:

  1. If the electro magnetic meter is installed on plastic pipe or painted pipe, grounding rings must be installed at both ends of the sensor. Otherwise, the electro magnetic meter cannot work normally.

  2. In the case of non-metallic piping, a grounding ring is necessary, otherwise the measured value will be unstable.

  3. In addition; different media also need to choose different materials of grounding ring, to meet the corrosion requirements. (Optional materials: stainless steel, Hastelloy, tantalum, etc.)

In short, according to Faraday's principle of electromagnetic induction, when the electromagnetic flowmeter selection of grounding electrode application can not meet the requirements of the field application, the magnetic field interference is large, you should choose to add a grounding ring to do grounding.
