Ultrasonic flow meter as a non-contact flow measurement instrument, in industrial production, water treatment, energy management and other fields have been widely used. Ultrasonic flowmeter using ultrasonic propagation velocity in the fluid to measure the flow, has many advantages, but there are some limitations.

  • Non-Intrusive Measurement:

    • Clamp-On Design: Many ultrasonic flow meters are clamp-on, meaning they do not require cutting into the pipe or interrupting the flow. This reduces installation time and cost.

    • No Pressure Drop: Since there is no obstruction in the flow path, there is no pressure drop, which is beneficial for energy efficiency.

  • High Accuracy:

    • Precise Measurements: Modern ultrasonic flow meters offer high accuracy, often within ±0.5% to ±1% of the measured value, depending on the model and application.

    • Wide Turndown Ratio: Can measure a wide range of flow rates with consistent accuracy.

  • Stable operation, no maintenance: ultrasonic flow meter in normal operation, usually has a long service life and low failure rate. In addition, because of its internal no moving parts, so there is no need for regular maintenance or replacement parts, greatly reducing the cost of use.

  • No Moving Parts:

    • Low Maintenance: The absence of moving parts reduces wear and tear, leading to lower maintenance costs and longer lifespan.

    • No Risk of Mechanical Failure: Less prone to mechanical issues compared to mechanical flow meters.

  • Versatility:

    • Wide Range of Applications: Suitable for measuring the flow of liquids, gases, and slurries in various industries, including water treatment, oil and gas, chemical, and HVAC.

    • Bidirectional Flow Measurement: Can measure flow in both directions.

  • Not easily affected by the medium: ultrasonic flow meter does not contact the liquid, not easy to be affected by the nature of the liquid and the inclusion of debris, especially suitable for measuring corrosive, easy to scale and high viscosity liquid.

  • Easy Installation and Portability:

    • Clamp-On Models: Can be installed without shutting down the process, making them ideal for temporary or portable applications.

    • Retrofit Applications: Easily added to existing pipelines without major modifications.

  • Compatibility with Various Pipe Materials:

    • Works with pipes made of metal, plastic, or composite materials, as long as the pipe material allows ultrasonic waves to pass through.

Ultrasonic Flow Meter Disadvantages

  1. The measured fluid temperature is generally lower than 200 ℃, that is, the temperature measurement range is not high;

  2. Poor anti-interference ability, ultrasonic flowmeter measurement data is susceptible to media containing air bubbles, pipe scaling, pumps, and other sound sources mixed into the ultrasonic noise interference, measurement accuracy is easily disturbed;

  3. Pipeline vibration shadow effect: Although the ultrasonic flowmeter is a non-contact measurement equipment, but in some cases, pipeline vibration may have an impact on the measurement results. For example, in the case of unstable fluid flow or pipe vibration, may affect the reception and resolution of ultrasonic signals.

Ultrasonic flow meter with its unique advantages in specific applications excel, but in the choice, the user needs to take into account the characteristics of the fluid and the measurement environment on the accuracy of the impact to ensure the best measurement results.
