Sanitary magnetic flowmeter are specifically designed for industries with strict hygiene requirements, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and beverages. In addition to delivering accurate flow measurement, they must ensure that all wetted parts comply with sanitary standards to prevent contamination or residue buildup. When selecting a sanitary magnetic flowmeter, it is essential to comprehensively consider factors such as the characteristics of the measured medium, process conditions, regulatory requirements, and the performance of the instrument itself.
1. Media and Process Compatibility
Fluid Conductivity: The conductivity must be greater than 5 μS/cm (typical cleaning solutions and dairy products meet this requirement).
Temperature and Pressure Range: The meter should cover the full process limits, including extreme conditions such as instant high temperatures in UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) processing.
Corrosion Resistance and Hygiene Level: Select appropriate materials based on the medium characteristics (e.g., strong acid/alkali CIP solutions, high-sugar or high-fat products) to ensure durability and sanitary compliance.
2. Core Material Selection (Critical)
Lining: PFA/PTFE is suitable for high temperatures, strong corrosion, and viscous products, and is easy to clean.
Rubber linings offer lower cost and are suitable for mild operating conditions.
Electrodes: 316L stainless steel – general-purpose applications.
Hastelloy C – resistant to strong corrosion.
Platinum-iridium alloy – for the highest aseptic requirements.
Housing and Connections: Stainless steel housing with sanitary connections such as Tri-Clamp fittings.
Surface Roughness: The wetted surface finish can reach Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, meeting food-grade hygienic standards.
3. Performance and Certifications
Accuracy Class: Typically ±0.5% or ±0.2%. Higher accuracy is recommended for batching and cost control applications.
Protection Rating: IP68/IP69K is recommended for washdown areas to ensure reliable performance in harsh cleaning environments.
Authoritative Certifications: The meter must be certified with 3-A and EHEDG hygienic design standards and comply with food contact regulations such as FDA requirements.
4. Installation and Functional Requirements
Pipe Size: Select the diameter based on the flow range, ensuring that the normal operating flow remains within 20%–80% of the full scale for optimal accuracy.
Power Supply and Output: Match the on-site power supply (24VDC or 220VAC) and required output signals (4–20 mA, pulse, or fieldbus communication).
Smart Features: Functions such as self-diagnostics, empty pipe detection, batch totalizing, and CIP optimization can significantly improve operational efficiency.
The sanitary magnetic flowmeter adopts newly developed hygienic lining materials and advanced lining technology, fully meeting the hygiene requirements of the food industry. It features a stainless steel housing and stainless steel clamp connections, allowing for quick disassembly and cleaning.
This design minimizes the risk of contamination during operation and effectively prevents residue buildup inside the measuring tube. It is widely used in the production of mineral water, soy sauce, jam, beer, juice, rice wine, milk, and other food products, as well as in sanitary and chemical industries.
