How Electromagnetic Flowmeters Work

Schematic diagram of the working principle of an electromagnetic flowmeter

Measurement Principle

Electromagnetic flowmeters measure conductive liquids based on Faraday’s law. As the liquid flows through a magnetic field, electrodes detect an induced voltage proportional to the flow velocity. The transmitter processes this signal and calculates the volumetric flow rate based on the known cross-sectional area of the measuring tube.

With no moving parts or obstruction in the measuring tube, magnetic flowmeters create no significant pressure loss and require little mechanical maintenance.

Measurement Requirements

Reliable measurement requires sufficient liquid conductivity, a completely filled pipe and stable grounding. Excessive air bubbles, unsuitable flow velocity or incompatible liner and electrode materials may affect measurement performance.

Application Range

Suitable for conductive liquids such as water, wastewater, slurry, pulp, acids, alkalis and conductive food or beverage liquids.

How to Select the Right Electromagnetic Flowmeter

As an electromagnetic flowmeter supplier, ARTang recommends selecting the right model based on fluid properties, process conditions, material compatibility, installation requirements, and signal integration to ensure accurate and reliable flow measurement before quotation.

Process Conditions & Fluid Properties

Start by confirming the measured medium, process temperature, operating pressure, flow rate range, and pipe size to determine the basic electromagnetic flowmeter configuration for your application.

Fluid Conductivity Requirements

Fluid conductivity is essential for magnetic flow measurement. Standard electromagnetic flowmeters are suitable for media above 5 µS/cm, while low-conductivity liquids from 0.8–5 µS/cm may require ARTang pure water magnetic flowmeters.

Liner and Electrode Material Selection

Liner and electrode materials should be selected according to fluid corrosiveness, abrasion, temperature, and pressure.

Nominal Diameter and Connection

The flowmeter size and connection type should match the pipeline size and installation conditions.

Power Supply and Output Signals

Power supply and output signals should be confirmed according to your control system requirements.

    FAQ About Electromagnetic Flowmeters

What liquids can an electromagnetic flowmeter measure?

An electromagnetic flowmeter can measure conductive liquids such as water, wastewater, slurry, acid, alkali, chemical liquids, and some food or beverage liquids. It is not suitable for non-conductive liquids such as oil, gas, steam, or pure hydrocarbons.

Can electromagnetic flowmeters measure oil, gas, or steam?

No. Electromagnetic flowmeters are not suitable for non-conductive liquids such as oil, gas, steam, or pure hydrocarbons.

How do I choose the lining material for an electromagnetic flowmeter?

The lining material should be selected according to the liquid’s corrosion, abrasion, temperature, and hygiene requirements. Common options include PTFE, PFA, rubber, and polyurethane. For corrosive liquids, PTFE or PFA is often considered. For abrasive slurry, wear-resistant lining may be required.

What is the difference between integrated and remote electromagnetic flowmeters?

An integrated electromagnetic flowmeter combines the sensor and transmitter in one unit, which is suitable for standard installation. A remote type separates the transmitter from the sensor and is better for high temperature, vibration, flooded, underground, or hard-to-access locations.

Can ARTang support customized electromagnetic flowmeters?

Yes. ARTang supports customized electromagnetic flowmeters with different sizes, materials, connections, transmitter types, signal outputs, and installation options.
